EDUCATIONAL COMIC BOOKS

This two-part comic book was conceptualised to educate children in communities surrounding the Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe about human-wildlife conflict and to introduce ways in which domestic livestock might be better protected to reduce losses to wild carnivores.

COMIC STRIP ILLUSTRATION

I created this series of 56 comic strips titled ‘the Settlers Kids’ way back in 1974, at the age of 16. Back then, I used a mapping-nib pen and Indian ink (which often caught in the board grain and splattered the ink). I then progressed to using a 00-size Kolinsky sable-hair brush to achieve line thickness variation. Fortunately, I used good quality Indian ink and 2mm-thick art board, so the original artwork has survived the past 30-odd years remarkably well – bar some yellowing of the board.

CHILDREN’S PICTURE BOOKS

As a father to three, one of my fondest memories is the time spent reading bedtime stories. The rapt attention of their young minds as they gaze in fascination at the pictures, absorb the story, and query the facts with a perpetual “why?” is rewarding to both child and parent alike.

But bedtime story books that are short enough for young concentration spans, and contain interesting pictures, appropriate subject matter, and educational facts are hard to find. Until now that is! This book aims to provide just that.

ARCHITECTURAL ILLUSTRATION

Once upon a time…I spent months conceptualising an American-styled summer camp. I sketched these pen & ink illustrations while visualising the camp layout, buildings, and interior spaces. I even wrote a 60 page business marketing plan for this. Never got past concept stage but it’s still a dream!

EVENT ILLUSTRATION

I did a series of illustrations for an annual Tiger Fishing Tournament event at Jozini Dam in KwaZulu-Natal. These invitations were printed, die-cut, and snail-mailed to clients. The skinny guy with cap is my likeness. Some of the antics shown in the illustrations actually happened. Great fun!

CARICATURE ILLUSTRATION

I used to do caricature portraits for The Mail House staff long service awards. Each illustration incorporated the persons character traits. In this example, the brief was that the person wears many hats in his business and personal life, has the energy of a “Duracel” battery bunny, and loves children.
